Let’s Have a Pool Party!

pool-party-iOK, it’s party time. The most fun you could ever have around your pool is when you have guests and are entertaining.  It is the perfect time to show off your pool  from Pools by Design your Woodlands Pool Builder . The key here is preparation.  Invitations, menus, helpers, pool, and yard will all need to be taken care of in advance.  The more you do ahead of time, the more time you will have to enjoy the party.  Start about a month before the party. Make a list of who you want to come. We can’t give any advice here.  But too many people would not only be unsafe, but we want enough room for eating, swimming, and just lying around.

So, here are a few tips for the pool party, and believe me, we’ve been to hundreds.

1)   Invites. Get something fun. Hand made invitations are cool, and personal. Another quicker, cheaper option is using evite.com to send out invitations. *** Remind everyone to bring a towel and swimming suite.

2)   Recruit. Get some help. The best parties were planned with several people. Get some helpers. Johnny does the food, Karin gets the liquor, and Steve gets the ice. And be sure to get a name or two for clean up. The end of the night is always the hardest to recruit help, so ask for clean up help before the party. You don’t need to clean the whole yard, but you will need to secure the trash, leftover food and such.

3)   Food. Decisions, decisions. You could go all out, roast a pig, smoked chicken. Or, keep it simple. Finger sandwiches, fruit bowl, or just burgers and dogs. The more “self serve food” you offer, the more time you have for fun. But, remember, the first thing people usually remember about a party, is the food. Give your guests something to talk about and remember. It’s not too hard to do!

4)   Drinks. You can’t have a good pool party without good beverages. But, an open bar can mean a disaster. If everyone is allowed to mix their own beverages, there is always someone who can ruin it for the rest of the guests. If alcohol is served, serve responsible, or serve beer and wine in moderation. Remember, Alcohol use is involved in about 35% to 50% of adolescent and adult deaths associated with water recreation. And please don’t let guests who drink, drive. Call your local cab company in advance and set up an account for the evening.

5)  Safety. This one is easy. Call your local swimming pool management company, and hire a lifeguard or two for the event. It’s not expensive, and well worth it. If someone has had too much to drink, keep them away from the pool. Things we all take for granted like diving boards, slides and just jumping off the side of the pool, can pose a threat to those impaired, and everyone else trying to have a good time. Keep safety equipment handy, and ALWAYS keep a working phone dry, and near the pool.

6)   The Pool.  A week or so before the party, test everything pool related. (The lights, the heater, and the fountains) Make sure any electrical outlets that will be used are grounded. Trip hazards, excess patio and lawn furniture should be stored, or moved away from the pool deck, to allow easy access to the pool. Add a clarifier to the pool several days before the party. Small unfiltered particles are very easy to see at night with the pool light on, so take that extra step to get your pool as clear as possible. And make sure the pH and chlorine are adjusted. A chlorine residual of 3.0 is perfect.   The morning of the party, brush the pool and then vacuum an hour later. Remove your automatic pool cleaner and store it away for the party. Polaris parts are not cheap!

7)   The Party!  The moment we’ve all been waiting forParty time!  Got enough Tiki torch fuel? Ice? Soda? Make that last minute run to the store and you should be set. With proper preparation, all of the chores are done, and it’s time to party. So, fire up the grill, and ice down the punch. It’s your turn to relax.

Top 10 Pool Party Games

SUMMER IS HERE!!!!  If you’re throwing a pool party to celebrate the last day of school, or just looking for some pool game ideas, look no farther. Here is my Top 10 list of fun games to play in or by the pool this summer.

  1. Boat Races – This crazy game will have everyone grinning. Have each person get into the pool at one end with a small plastic boat. They are going to race their boats to a predetermined finish line. The twist – they have to blow their boat across. If they touch their boats, it’s back to the starting line for them!
  2. Dress-up Relay Race – Divide the group into two teams. Equipment: 2 pairs of XL board shorts, 2 pairs of sunglasses, 2 straw hats , 2 beach bags, 2 beach chairs. Each team lines up in a row. Place chairs a reasonable running distance in front of each team or any distance your space will allow. The objects listed above are placed into the beach bags and located with each team. The first runners dress in ALL of the items, run to the chair, return and take all of the items off again. The next players continue until the entire team has had a turn.
  3. Rope Pull Relay – A rope is strung or held above a stream or across a pool. The first player sits on an air mattress and must pull himself to the other side where the next teammate gets on the mattress and pulls himself back to the other side. This continues until all players on the team have gone. Which team is the fastest?
  4. Noodle Joust – Select 2 players to sit on a blow up raft in the middle of the pool. Give each one a pool noodle and have them joust with the noodles and try and get each other off the raft. The winner takes on the next player.
  5. Wet T-Shirt Relay – This wet t-shirt relay isn’t the typical wet t-shirt contest. This wet t-shirt contest is fun and appropriate for all ages. All you need are two large t-shirts and two teams of pool party guests willing to play this fun and exciting game. Line up equal numbers of pool party guests on either sides of the pool. Give a wet t-shirt to the first person in line on each side. At the start of the game, the first person must put the wet t-shirt on over their bathing suit and swim to the other side of the pool. After touching the other side of the pool, the person must swim back, remove the t-shirt, and pass it to their team member who then must put it on and follow suit. The first team to complete this task wins the game.
  6. Watermelon Push Relay – This is a funny relay race for individuals or teams. Players must push a watermelon from one end of the pool to the other without touching the bottom of the pool with their feet.
  7. Rubber Duck Race – Using only their noses, players nudge a rubber duck from one end of the pool to the other.
  8. Relay Races – Make up fun relay races for two teams of players to complete. Players take turns going from one side of the pool to the other doing crazy requests such as: swimming backwards, riding a pool noodle, walking on their hands, doing summersaults in the water, twirling, crawling on the bottom of the pool.
  9. Bobbing for Flip-Flops – Fill a large tub with water. Before the party, use a permanent marker to write either a 1,2,or 3 on each flip flop and place them into the tub of water. Create 3 corresponding prize bags (grocery bags). Write 1,2,or 3 onto the bags and fill them with candy bars, gum or other inexpensive items. To play: Two players at a time hold their hands behind their backs and they must use their teeth to grab a flip-flop. They then collect a prize from the bag that matches the # on the one they “caught”.
  10. Flip Flop Fantastic – Every child gets one flip-flop sandal and has to search the yard for its match. The pair is a prize to take home.

How To Clear Up & Clean A Green Swimming Pool

There are only three things that will clear up a green swimming pool…

1 – Your filter system

 2 – Your pool chemicals

3- And you !

Unfortunately, there is no magic way to turn a green or black pool clear overnight ! It usually takes a lot of time, effort and money to clear up a typical “swampy” green pool. It is certainly best if you never let your pool water get this dirty, however most pool owners experience a “green pool problem” from time to time. Although it is not easy work, there is a proven method of clearing up a green, black or very dirty pool in the shortest time possible. Follow the instructions below for the best results.

Remove most of the large debris from the pool floor with a large leaf net (not a hand skimmer!). This will stir up the water, and may make your pool look much worse temporarily, but the stirred up debris will settle within a few hours. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO VACUUM THE POOL IF YOU CANNOT SEE THE BOTTOM OF IT OR IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF DEBRIS ON THE BOTTOM. YOU MAY CLOG YOUR SKIMMER, FILTER OR UNDERGROUND PIPES !

Adjust the pH and Alkalinity levels of the water using pH Plus, pH Minus and Alkalinity Plus. These levels must be within the proper ranges or the water will never clear.

Shock the pool. This means super chlorinating the water to kill off any bacteria and algae. If your pool is very dirty, it may need MANY gallons of liquid chlorine (shock) over a period of days before the water clears. Start off by adding 3 or 4 gallons, and if you see no results overnight, add 3 or 4 more gallons the next day. Continue this process until you notice the water changing color to either cloudy white, light green or clear. YOU CANNOT OVER SHOCK A POOL ! The more you add, the quicker it will clear ! Note…shock is available in liquid or powdered form, but we recommend using liquid (it works faster). You may also want to add a high quality algaecide to the water at this point.

Run your filter 24 hours a day and backwash 3 or 4 times a day for quickest results. Green or cloudy water will quickly clog a filter, therefore you may have to backwash your filter many times a day until the pool clears. THIS IS NORMAL ! Remember, you cannot over-backwash a pool filter. The more you run your pool, and the more you backwash the filter, the faster the pool will clear up. If you have a D.E. filter, remember to add new D.E. to the skimmer closest to your filter after each backwashing. A D.E. filter is more work than a sand filter, but the D.E. filter will clear a green pool about 50% faster than a sand filter.

If you follow these instructions and your pool does not clear up within 4 or 5 days, your filter may not be functioning properly. If this is the case with your pool, have the filter system checked out by a professional. The pool will never clear up if the filter is not working properly ! Once the water does clear up, you will most probably see debris on the pool floor (dead leaves, algae, etc.). If there is only a small amount of debris present, you may want to vacuum it up using your own pool vacuum system. If there is a lot of debris on the pool floor, you should have the pool professionally POWER VACUUMED. This will save a lot of wear and tear to your filter system, as well as assuring that no debris gets clogged in your pool pipes.

I hope this helps in those “it just got away from me” moments. Contact your lake conroe pool builder if you have any more questions.

How to Find a Good Pool Builder in Spring

Since swimming pools are big investments, it would be incredibly important for you to hire a trustworthy builder pool in Spring to get yours done. And remember: you won’t be able to get the swimming pool you have always dreamed of if you don’t find a contractor that is accredited and has a good history of work.

Besides, a qualified pool builder in Spring can help you pick out the perfect swimming pool for you and your family, as well. He will also be able to tell you how much work you can look forward to when it comes to your pool’s maintenance and let you know beforehand how much your pool installation will cost overall.

If you have a list of what you can actually afford or have an idea of how much inconvenience you wouldn’t mind putting up with while your pool is being installed, make sure you talk to your contractor about these things, too. On that note, make sure you talk about the materials that are going to be used and what kind of features you want your swimming pool to have, as well. This way, you can ensure that you are on the same page come installation time.

Now, there are several basic things that you will need to find out before signing any contracts, though. First of all, you have to find out how long your pool builder has been in the business, so you can ensure that he actually has the experience needed to properly install a swimming pool to begin with.

Next, find out what his company’s reputation is like in Spring. Do you know anybody in the neighborhood who has contracted him and has raved about his work? If not, then you might want to ask your pool builder for some references first.

Since swimming pools are big investments, it would be incredibly important for you to hire a trustworthy builder pool in Spring to get yours done. And remember: you won’t be able to get the swimming pool you have always dreamed of if you don’t find a contractor that is accredited and has a good history of work. If you have found yourself a quality contractor, then he should be proud of the work that he has done and won’t have any qualms providing you with the information that you need. If your pool builder in Spring refuses to provide any references, though, then he is probably hiding something, so avoid using him at all costs.

Depending on your budget and personal preferences, you can opt for an inexpensive basic swimming pool or an expensive and elaborate one. Either way, though, your pool builder in Spring should work with you, as well as make suggestions without pressuring you into adding things that you cannot afford.
